While Vevay gained attention for its black tulip field, there’s far more to this small river town than just a seasonal bloom. Set along the scenic Ohio River in Switzerland County, Vevay has fewer than 2,000 residents. But don’t let its size fool you – it’s filled with antique treasures, quirky history, and just enough unexpected stories to keep things interesting.
I spent two days exploring Vevay, and it quickly became one of those places that feel like a discovery! Before you even arrive, there’s one thing you need to know: it’s pronounced, “Vee-vee.” Say it any other way, and a local will likely correct you.
Below is an itinerary of all the places I explored or were recommended to visit. Keep in mind, this is not a complete list of things to do in Vevay or Switzerland County.
A Small Town That Made Big Headlines
Vevay found itself in the national spotlight when Kat Von D relocated here from Los Angeles in 2021. She purchased the historic Schenck Mansion, a 35-room Second Empire–style estate filled with antiques. With that move came a ripple effect. New businesses, creative energy, and even the occasional celebrity sighting began weaving their way into this quiet Indiana town.
The Black Tulip Field
One of the most talked-about additions is the now-iconic black tulip field just outside the mansion.
Planted with thousands of Queen of the Night tulips, the blooms appear almost black but are actually a deep, velvety maroon or purple. The field, often referred to as a “goth garden,” is open to the public during bloom season for a short window each spring. It’s free to visit and open 24 hours a day, though visitors are asked to respect the property by not entering the mansion grounds or picking the flowers.

Eats in Vevay
Roxy’s Bar & Lounge
If there’s one place that captures Vevay‘s unexpected edge, it’s Roxy’s—opened by Roxy Morin, a close friend of Kat’s and a former wardrobe coordinator for artists like Justin Timberlake and The Eagles. This Southern-style tavern is anything but ordinary. The space is dark, earthy, and vintage with a striking six-foot amber chandelier gifted by Kat Von D.
The building itself adds another layer of intrigue. Built in 1895, a 6,300-square-foot Italianate building once served as a telephone company office and was later owned by John Roger Sherry, a man wanted by the FBI. Today, it still holds a few secrets… including hidden compartments that only add to its eerie charm.
The food and drinks are all handcrafted, and if you’re gluten-free, this is the spot for pizza. It’s the kind of place where a small-town tavern collides with big-city creativity. And yes, you might just spot a celebrity at the bar.
Leaves & Lace House of Tea
For something softer and slower, this charming tea house is a must. Serving a wide selection of teas, espresso drinks, and lunch fare, it’s the perfect place to pause. They also offer traditional tea service, which feels like stepping into a different era. Reservations are recommended for the full experience.
Shopping in Vevay
If your idea of a good time involves digging through vintage finds and one-of-a-kind treasures, Vevay delivers. The downtown feels like one continuous treasure hunt, filled with antique shops, boutiques, and artisan goods.
- Vevay Vintage Prop & Shop – A favorite of Kat Von D, this shop is known for its massive collection of mid-century barware (over 10,000 pieces), vintage clothing, and unusual oddities. It also doubles as a prop rental space for photographers and events.
- Vevay Antique Mall – Located right next door, this multi-vendor antique mall is packed with 19th and 20th-century furniture, glassware, home decor, and even mystery grab bags for the curious shopper. The antique mall is located in the former Danner’s building – the oldest continually operating business site in Indiana (est. 1838)!
Historic Sites in Vevay
Vevay is more than quirky shops. It’s also deeply rooted in history; the town is home to a designated historic district featuring over 275 buildings across 100 acres.
- Switzerland County Historical Museum – Located inside a former 1860 Greek Revival church, this museum highlights everything from Native American artifacts to military history and even Indiana’s first piano.
- Life on the Ohio River History Museum – This companion museum dives into the town’s steamboat past, with detailed models and river artifacts.
- Switzerland County Visitors Center – Housed in the historic Phoenix Hotel (1888), this is a great starting point for your visit.
- Old Vevay Jail – Built in 1854, this limestone jail is open for self-guided exploration. It’s quiet, eerie, and just unsettling enough to make you question how long you want to stay inside. (I didn’t last long.)
The Yellow Duck
Not a historic marker, but be sure to stop and get your photo with the iconic “Yellow Duck” in Vevay. The giant rubber duck statue is located at 723 Main Street in front of the Little Lambs Childcare Ministry. Originally used as a fundraiser prop for a local wine festival on the Ohio River, it has since become a permanent roadside landmark and popular photo destination.
Where to Stay in Vevay
During my visit, I stayed here and loved the location. It’s right in the heart of town, within walking distance of shops and restaurants. The Vevay Swiss Inn is the oldest operating inn in the state! It’s a “small town” inn with historic rooms, yet equipped with modern comforts, including Wi-Fi and amenities.
While I didn’t stay here personally, the Pleasants Rose Mansion came highly recommended. Set in a restored 1881 mansion along the river, this bed and breakfast offers fireplaces, historic charm, and a full homemade breakfast.
Vevay is a town where I wandered without a plan, heard stories I wasn’t expecting, and discovered places that felt off the beaten path. Add in a gothic tulip field, a hint of celebrity intrigue, and a whole lot of history, and you’ve got one of Indiana’s most quietly fascinating destinations.
