I usually don’t make an effort to stop at truck stops. However, when it comes to the world’s largest, I definitely made this a stop on my trip. These iconic stops blend quirky Americana, transportation history, and traveler-friendly amenities, making them an ideal destination for road trippers, truck enthusiasts, and curious explorers alike.
Why Stop At the World’s Largest Truck Stop?
Located right off Exit 284 on I-80, the World’s Largest Truck Stop isn’t just a place to refuel—it’s the largest truck stop in the nation, and a true roadside wonder. Even if you’re not a trucker, this place is worth a stop. Over 100,000 square feet of space, including restaurants, truck services, gift shops, and even a movie theater. It’s a fun and unique stop, even if you’re car camping, RVing, or just passing through.
It also features some unexpected full-service amenities:
- Barber, dentist, chiropractor, laundry, and overnight parking
- Chrome Shop and Super Truck Showroom for truck lovers and gearheads
- 24-hour Iowa 80 Kitchen diner with classic Midwest meals
This truck stop isn’t just a gas station—it’s a mini-city built for the road. Whether you’re traveling with family or on a solo drive, it’s one of the top things to do on I-80 in Iowa.

Explore the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum
Right next to the truck stop is a spot that often gets overlooked but is easily one of the best free museums in Iowa: the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum. It’s always free to visit! Even if you skip the truck stop itself, I highly recommend visiting the museum. Plan at least an hour, especially if you enjoy history, transportation, or retro Americana.
The trucking museum offers:
- Over 100 antique trucks, dating back to the early 1900s
- Restored vintage signage, gas pumps, engines, and historical tools
- Interactive exhibits showcasing the history of the American truck
- Clean, well-organized, air-conditioned space for all ages
- Great for taking photos, educational visits, or just stretching your legs
If you’re visiting in July, check out the Iowa 80 Truckers Jamboree—a weekend-long celebration with live music, antique trucks, fireworks, and thousands of visitors. It’s the perfect time to see these attractions in their full glory.
