It’s Christmas time in the city! Happening just north of Indianapolis is the Carmel Christkindlmarkt 2018, a traditional European holiday market. According to their website, Chriskindlmarkt is German for “Christ child market” or Christmas market. This is Carmel’s second year hosting the market. I didn’t get an opportunity to go to last year, having lived near South Bend it was closer for me to go to the Chicago Christkindlmarkt (which I highly suggest as well, just don’t go on a weekend due to should-to-shoulder crowds).
The market is filled with vendors of all kinds, from food to handicrafts and decorations. While I’m typically food-focused I love browsing all the hand painted German ornaments and art, it’s amazing the talent that is put into these little treasures!
I got a little sneak peek of the market this week and I’m pretty pumped about sharing some of my photos with you! Whether having a date night or taking the whole family, Christkindlmarkt is both romantic and family-fun, in my humble opinion. While filled with kid’s activities, ice skating and a Kinder Club (the Kid’s Corner), I can also imagine an evening alone under the lights ice skating and drinking hot cider with my husband. (Or in my case, attempting to ice skate and not burn myself by spilling hot beverages. Ahh, the exciting life cruising through the clumsy lane!)
Let’s get to the basics first. Here is what you need to know:
- All details can be found on their website here.
- Location: 10 Center Green – Carmel, IN (Between The Palladium and The Tarkington Theater)
- Opens to the public on Saturday, November 17th, 2018 at 12 pm through December 23rd, 2018
- Hours are Monday-Tuesday: CLOSED. Wednesday-Thursday: 4-9pm. Friday-Sunday: 12-9pm.
- They will be closed on November 22 for Thanksgiving Day.
- Parking is free in Carmel and there are two parking garages located nearby. Expect full parking lots and street parking on the weekends.
Next, my favorite – food!
There are a ton of food vendors at Christkindlmarkt! Want a crepe? Bavarian pretzel? Some delicious beverages? Schnitzel and sauerkraut (yum!)? All here.
My favorites: Bacon baked cheese from the Baked Cheese Haus, cream cheese kolaczki from CC’s Specialty Foods, chocolates from XChocl’Art, Belgian waffles from the Walking Waffle Company, and sausages from Wurst Haus.
Also featured are the 2018 holiday mugs! Each year Christkindlmarkt comes out with a new mug, grab yourself a 2018 mug while you are there for $10 (this includes an alcoholic or non-alcoholic drink of your choice at the Gluhwein Pyramid).
The Ice at Center Green
It wouldn’t be a Christmas market without ice skating! If you are like me this might seem like a challenge, but have no fear – it is for all ages and skill levels! The rink will be open through March 19th, 2018. If you don’t have your own skates, skate rental is $4 each, admission to the rink is $10 for adults and children ages 11 & up, or $8 for children under 10 years old. Check out the seasonal calendar here for daily hours of operation.
Arts and Handicrafts
Just over 20 of the vendors here will be selling artwork, crafts, ornaments, and other handcrafted items and gifts. There is also a specific Carmel Christkindlmarkt ornament available for purchase, I hear that a new ornament will be available each year!
The Kinderecke is a club for kids and families offering crafts, coloring, and activities. It is located in Hut #41 where there will also be special appearances by fairy princesses, woodworkers, Hildegard, and Mr. Daniel. Kids can pick up a Passport book which will allow them to collect 5 stamps from different vendors, they can redeem this for a special prize!
