How to Get Around Indianapolis
- Downtown Indianapolis is accessible by car. Street-metered parking is available through ParkIndy and is free between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. Monday through Saturday, all day Sundays, and select holidays. Downtown has over 73,000 parking spaces. Metered rates range from $1.25 to $1.75 per hour. ParkWhiz allows for extended parking in lots and garages downtown.
- The Indianapolis public bus system, managed by IndyGo, features an extensive network of over 30 routes, providing transportation services throughout the city.
- Taxi and ride-sharing services operate in the city. Taxis charge a flat rate of $5 for rides originating and ending in the city center. Additionally, Uber and Lyft offer services in Indianapolis.
- Pacers Bikeshare, which provides bike-sharing services in Indianapolis, has over 50 stations and 525 bikes for rent. Customers can choose between 24-hour, monthly, and yearly rental plans, starting at $1 a trip and 15 cents a minute.
- Lime provides electric scooters for rent throughout Indy. Scooters start at $1 to unlock and then a per-minute fee.
Tips for Visiting Indianapolis
- Are you considering visiting multiple attractions? The Indy Attraction Pass presents an excellent value. For half the price, you can choose a one-day or three-day pass and gain admission to seven of Indianapolis’s most popular destinations.
- Instead of taking a taxi from the airport, you can save money by riding the Go Express Travel shuttle, which transports visitors to downtown Indy for under $15.
- Indianapolis offers a wide range of guided tours, providing a fun and informative way to explore the city. Visitors can choose from tours of iconic landmarks, such as the City Market Catacombs, and unique and themed tours, such as food and cemetery tours.
- Indianapolis is called “Circle City” because roundabouts are a prevalent feature. For those unfamiliar with navigating a roundabout, refer to these practical “how-to” instructions: https://www.in.gov/indot/traffic-engineering/roundabouts/
- If you are traveling from outside of the state, here are a few Indiana laws to keep in mind:
- Marijuana is illegal; sports betting is legal.
- Liquor can’t be sold in stores between 12-8 p.m. on Sundays.
- U-turns are allowed at stoplights in left turn lanes when there is a median.
- Handgun permits are not required to carry.
- While May is a great time to visit Indiana, be aware that the renowned Indianapolis 500 race on Memorial Day weekend attracts enormous crowds, potentially making the city more crowded than usual. If possible, avoid visiting Indianapolis over Memorial Day weekend if you aren’t attending the Indy 500.
