Indiana has many charming Hallmark movie towns. These towns, with their adorable downtowns, offer a quintessential experience (especially during the holidays!). These are my top recommendations for Indiana’s most adorable “Hallmark movie ” towns, from quaint small towns to a countryside feel.
Cambridge City
With its quaint population of 2,000, Cambridge City, Indiana, is a haven for antique lovers. Known as “antique alley,” the town has numerous antique shops and is a major stop on Indiana’s largest antique trail. Its historic buildings and charming Airbnbs create a cozy, festive atmosphere, especially during the annual Winter Wonderland Festival. The town’s picturesque setting makes it an ideal backdrop for a Hallmark movie, perhaps featuring a heartwarming encounter between a local antique shop owner and a visitor in town for the Christmas festival.
Carmel
Carmel is an upscale suburb of Indianapolis and is recognized as a top Hallmark “Christmas” movie town, with its “Best Holiday Market in the US” Carmel Christkindlmarkt. The city’s festive atmosphere brings this traditional German Christmas market to the city’s center with twinkling lights, ice skating, and cozy wooden huts selling food and gifts. It creates a magical setting reminiscent of a Hallmark Christmas movie, where chance encounters on the ice skating rink and cozy moments over hot chocolate are likely to unfold.
Visitors to Carmel can enjoy fine dining, shopping, jazz music, theatre, art in the Carmel Arts & Design District, and luxurious accommodations at the Carmichael Hotel and Ritz Charles.
Charlestown
This historic town is home to the Charlestown State Park, which offers stunning views of the Ohio River, outdoor activities, and the historic and intriguing ruins of the abandoned 1920s Rose Island Amusement Park. The town’s inviting downtown area features restaurants and historic buildings. Visitors can also enjoy a unique experience at Dylan Farms, interacting and photographing with highland cows. During the holiday season, the city comes alive with the Christmas Lights of Charlestown, offering a light show, train rides, ice skating, and festive traditions.
The anticipation builds for the upcoming Charlestown Hallmark movie: Will it follow two hikers‘ chance encounter in the atmospheric Charlestown State Park, or will it weave a love story around a shared passion for highland cows?
Corydon
Corydon offers a glimpse into Indiana’s past and a downtown worthy of a Hallmark movie town. It is steeped in history and surrounded by natural beauty. The town holds the distinction of being home to the Corydon Capitol State Historic Site, a significant landmark that served as the first state capitol of Indiana. This historic site offers a glimpse into the state’s early political landscape and the lives of its pioneer settlers – visitors can tour all these buildings.
The downtown area is popular with antique shops, a Broadway playhouse, a creamery, a coffee shop, and dining. The surrounding area boasts natural beauty with caverns, caves, a winery, blueberry farms, and cabins for rent. I suspect a potential Hallmark storyline focused on history.
Danville
Danville, located in Hendricks County, is a charming town with a mix of historical attractions, small-town ambiance, and modern conveniences. The Hendricks County Courthouse’s impressive Italianate and Second Empire architecture and a beautiful rotunda serve as the town’s centerpiece. It’s not only a visual landmark but also a venue for county events and festivals, along with a local orchard that hosts the Heartland Apple Festival.
Downtown Danville features murals, boutiques, an ice cream shop, the historic Royal Theater, and the Mayberry Cafe, a cafe themed after the Andy Griffith Show. The Mayberry Cafe adds to the town’s quaint, small-town atmosphere, perhaps even inspiring a Hallmark movie plot where a local police officer pulls over a speeding city driver and invites her for coffee at the cafe.
Franklin
With its charming downtown, historic architecture, and friendly atmosphere, Franklin is a perfect candidate for a “Hallmark movie town.” The beautifully preserved downtown boasts locally owned shops, boutiques, and restaurants, and the historic Artcraft Theatre offers a nostalgic, small-town movie experience. The town’s numerous art-themed alleys and murals, bookstore, history museum, downtown bakery, old train station-turned-ice cream shop, antique shops, and local coffee shops create an inviting, Hallmark-esque atmosphere.
Franklin is a must-visit for those seeking a charming small-town experience in Indiana. Imagine a Hallmark-themed ambiance, buzzing with excitement and the aroma of popcorn from the Artcraft Theatre, as a freelance writer returns home for the holidays to reconnect with her roots. She encounters a friendly face in the local coffee shop – her high school sweetheart, now the owner!
French Lick
With its blend of history, scenery, and luxury, French Lick provides the perfect setting for a romantic escape.
Indulge in a luxurious stay at the French Lick Resort. This iconic resort offers grand architecture, elegant accommodations, and top-notch amenities. Stroll through the gardens or ride the complimentary trolley. Pamper yourselves with a massage at the spa, or relax by the pool. At the West Baden Hotel, marvel at the stunning dome, take a guided tour, and enjoy a fine dining experience. Take a scenic drive through the countryside, enjoying the rolling hills and picturesque landscapes. Stop for a picnic at a scenic overlook and visit the French Lick Winery to sample local wines.
Picture this for a Hallmark scene…it’s a crisp autumn day, and golden leaves blanket the manicured lawns surrounding the grand French Lick Resort. A woman in her 30s stands by the ornate fountain, gazing at the hotel’s majestic facade. Across the courtyard, a slightly reserved man struggles with a bulky suitcase, navigating the cobblestone path. A comfortable silence falls between them as they look up at the resort.
Huntingburg
In southern Indiana, Huntingburg offers a charming town with a vibrant downtown. With its shops, art galleries, restaurants, and cafes, Main Street invites leisurely strolls and exploration. Huntingburg‘s proximity to parks and natural areas provides ample opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and fishing.
The historic League Stadium, home to the Dubois County Bombers, is a must-visit. Not only was it the filming location for “A League of Their Own,” but it also exudes a Hallmark movie town atmosphere. It’s already a filming site! Picture families enjoying hot dogs and popcorn while the announcer’s voice echoes through the stadium, creating the perfect backdrop for heartwarming connections and unforgettable moments.
Madison
The Madison Historic District is a National Historic Landmark known for its well-preserved 19th-century architecture. The Lanier Mansion State Historic Site is a beautifully restored Greek Revival mansion that offers a glimpse into the life of a wealthy 19th-century family. You can also explore the shops and restaurants in downtown Madison.
Take a scenic drive along the Ohio River Scenic Byway, which offers stunning views of the river and surrounding countryside. And don’t forget the waterfalls in Madison! Visit Clifty Falls State Park, which features several waterfalls, hiking trails, and scenic overlooks.
The Hallmark story unfolds when a big-city architect arrives in Madison to oversee a historic building restoration. She is at odds with a local historian and woodworking artisan who cares deeply about preserving Madison’s heritage. As they spend time together, their initial clashes give way to a heartwarming love story.
Nashville
Nashville, Indiana, is nestled in Brown County and offers visitors a range of outdoor activities. These include hiking and fishing in Brown County State Park, known for its “Little Smokies” scenery and Autumn season. Downtown Nashville features shops, art galleries, and the Brown County Winery, while the surrounding area offers horseback and ATV riding.
Accommodation options include the inn, cabins, campsites within the State Park, cozy Airbnbs, and vacation rentals in town. The downtown area is a hub of activity, with visitors exploring the quaint shops, dining in the cozy restaurants, and enjoying shows and concerts.
A Hallmark movie set in Nashville, Indiana, could follow a stressed-out big-city lawyer who inherits a quaint inn in Brown County. She arrives in town intending to sell it quickly but is charmed by the friendly locals, the beautiful fall scenery, and a handsome park ranger.
New Harmony
New Harmony, a unique town with a captivating history, is a blend of art, architecture, and natural beauty. The town’s intriguing past is rooted in two utopian societies. Visitors can explore historic sites, including the Working Men’s Institute and Library (one of Indiana’s oldest libraries, founded in 1838), the Harmonist Labyrinth (a circular hedge maze symbolizing the Harmonists’ spiritual journey), and the Roofless Church (an open-air interdenominational church designed by Philip Johnson).
The town’s history is reflected in its mix of architectural styles, which can be admired on a stroll through the streets. Nearby, Harmonie State Park offers outdoor recreation, and throughout the year, New Harmony hosts various events and festivals celebrating its history, art, and culture. Stay at the New Harmony Inn and Conference Center.
3-2-1, Hallmark movie action…
A young woman walks briskly through town, clutching a stack of books. She stops in front of the charming Working Men’s Institute and Library and pushes open the heavy wooden door, the bell above jingling merrily. Behind the checkout counter stands a handsome man with kind eyes and a neatly trimmed beard. He’s wearing a flannel shirt and has a welcoming smile.
Oldenburg
Oldenburg’s German heritage shines through in its historic architecture, which includes brick buildings and quaint storefronts lining Main Street. These, along with the local businesses and residents, give the small town a nostalgic charm often featured in a Hallmark movie. The surrounding rural landscape, with its fall foliage and snowy winter scenes, could be central to a Hallmark movie plot. Stay in nearby Batesville, another charming town.
The town’s German heritage is also highlighted during the annual Freudenfest and Christmas markets, where festive decorations and the aroma of baking create a perfect setting for a Hallmark movie romance. For instance, the movie could feature a big-city baker who unexpectedly inherits her late grandmother’s beloved cookie cottage and finds love in the charming town. The historic churches, charming shops and restaurants on Main Street, and popular events like the Holy Family Church Festival and Holidays Under the Spire further contribute to the town’s appeal as a Hallmark movie town.
Pendleton
Looking for a quick escape from the city? Pendleton, a quaint town only 30 miles northeast of Indianapolis, is the perfect destination for a day trip or weekend getaway. Pendleton is the perfect setting for a Hallmark movie town: imagine a woman leaving her demanding job in Chicago for a new life, only to collide (literally!) with a handsome stranger on the White River while kayaking…leading, of course, to a romantic picnic by Falls Creek.
Roanoke
Roanoke may be small, but it’s packed with charm and things to do! The Roanoke Historical Museum offers a glimpse into the town’s past, showcasing its journey from its founding to its key role in the Wabash and Erie Canal era.
Downtown Roanoke boasts unique boutiques and shops offering one-of-a-kind gifts, vintage finds, and locally made crafts. The town’s culinary scene is impressive, featuring local favorites like Joseph Decuis, a wagyu beef farm, and Moose & Mollie’s Cafe, known for its delicious gelato.

Santa Claus
Santa Claus, Indiana, fully embraces the Christmas spirit throughout the year. It offers a festive atmosphere and Christmas-themed attractions, making it a popular destination for visitors seeking a holiday experience at any time.
One of the main attractions is Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari, a theme park that combines the excitement of roller coasters and water rides with holiday-themed areas and shows. Visitors can also explore the Santa Claus Museum & Village to learn about the town’s history and the origins of its Christmas connection and stay at Santa’s Lodge. Santa’s Candy Castle is also a must-visit for those with a sweet tooth, as it offers candies, chocolates, and frozen hot chocolates.
Beyond the Christmas attractions, the town offers outdoor activities such as golfing, fishing, hiking, and biking. History buffs can visit the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial, commemorating President Abraham Lincoln’s childhood when he spent part of his youth in Indiana. Nature lovers can explore Lincoln State Park, which offers hiking, camping, and other outdoor activities.
A potential Hallmark movie town set in Santa Claus could follow a story about a workaholic event planner assigned to organize the town’s annual Christmas festival. She arrives in Santa Claus expecting to finish the job quickly and leave. She clashes with the town’s charming but traditional carpenter, who’s building the festival’s centerpiece. Through the magic of Christmas and the city’s warmth, they learn to balance their different approaches and find love amidst the holiday cheer.
Shipshewana
Visit Shipshewana, Indiana, and experience the Amish way of life! Take a scenic buggy ride through the countryside, past farms, fields, and homes, and immerse yourself in the rich history and culture of the Amish and Mennonite communities.
Shop at the Shipshewana Flea Market for Amish-made crafts, furniture, and food, then enjoy a delicious meal at a local Amish restaurant.
Explore the Menno-Hof to learn more about the Anabaptist faith and history. Then, visit the Blue Gate Theater to catch a live performance of a Broadway-style musical, concert, or other entertaining show.
Of course, this Hallmark movie scenario needs to involve the Amish. A young woman from the city visits her Amish grandmother in Shipshewana and falls in love with a handsome Amish man. Their different cultures forbid their relationship – will love conquer all?

The museum houses exhibits with artifacts, photos, and stories about the early settlers and other key figures who shaped the town. The Billy Sunday Home and Museum, once the residence of renowned preacher Billy Sunday, is also situated in Winona Lake.
A possible Hallmark movie set in Winona Lake could follow an overworked executive who inherits a charming lakeside cottage. Intending to sell it quickly, she arrives in town and is captivated by the friendly locals and charming village. She meets a handsome local handyman, and as they work together to restore the cottage, they fall in love.
Zionsville
Zionsville exudes a Hallmark movie town ambiance, especially during its Christmas in the Village event, which features horse-drawn wagon rides, carolers, and festive Christmas displays. As one of the Indianapolis area’s oldest neighborhoods, Zionsville boasts a New England charm with its Victorian architecture. Local shops and restaurants preserve the area’s original character, particularly downtown. The town’s inviting charm makes it feel like a scene from a Hallmark Christmas movie—life in Zionsville is genuinely that delightful!
A Hallmark movie set in Zionsville could tell the story of a big-city journalist who is sent to the small town to write a story about the annual Christmas festival. While there, she meets a handsome local man who shows her the true meaning of Christmas.
These towns and many others throughout Indiana offer unique charms and attractions that contribute to Indiana’s Hallmark movie towns. Indiana has something to offer whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, a family vacation, or a charming place to spend the holidays.
